Another example of the “China threat discourse” as seen in Chinese media

Chinese media likes to exaggerate the West’s — certainly existing — “China threat discourse” (中国威胁论). In the past two years, there has been some alarm(ism) in the West (as well as in Africa itself) on account of China’s rapidly expanding investments and development aid commitments in Africa: whether it can undermine the policies of the World Bank and other international development institutions (as many African governments hope it would) and whether it constitutes a siphoning off of the continent’s mineral resources a la coloniale. Mainstream media formulated these as questions, but a 16 October article on says that “Western media has been publishing article after article describing China as the ‘new colonialist’.” That is certainly an exaggeration, serving to underscore once again the West’s conspiracy against China’s rise.
