William Callahan on the Atlas of Shame

In an article entitled “National Insecurities: Humiliation, Salvation, and Chinese Nationalism” (Alternatives, 29:199-218 [2004]), political scientist William Callahan writes about China’s “deliberate celebration of national insecurity.” National humiliation, he writes, has its own “textbooks, museums, songs and parks,” including an Atlas of the Century of National Humiliation in Modern China.
