Putao forwarded a link to an article by Yan Xuetong, the influential nationalist and director of the International Relations Institute at Tsinghua University. The article was published in early 2006 and, on Sohu.com, triggered a lively debate. About 95% of the 804 responses agreed that China had to incrase military spending in order to defend itself from Japan and the US — that these countries were intent to attack it at the first possibility was treated as a given.
Still, there was some interesting dissent: a comment that said China should spend that money on social welfare and introduce democracy instead received 76 clicks “in support” to 75 “against”!
